- Description: This exceptional specimen of a 180 million year old ichthyosaur comes from the famous Lias Epsilon layers of the primeval quarry in Holzmaden, Germany. The fossil is remarkably well preserved and has been prepared with exceptional precision, so that it has been almost completely reconstructed. It is particularly noteworthy that the head of this ichthyosaur comes from another, but also excellently preserved specimen, which has been seamlessly integrated into the overall structure thanks to the excellent preparation. The head position and the front flipper paddle have been precisely aligned, allowing the fossil to be experienced in its original form and anatomy. The well-preserved teeth and the visible stomach contents, which are preserved under the ribs, offer valuable insights into the lifestyle and diet of this marine reptile.
- Additional information: Ichthyosaurs, an extinct group of marine reptiles, were perfectly adapted to their aquatic lifestyle and were reminiscent of modern whales in appearance and behavior. These animals lived mainly during the Mesozoic era and were master swimmers. Their fossils, especially those from the shale rocks of southern Germany, are of great scientific importance due to their exceptional preservation and attention to detail.
