- Additional information: Jasper, opaque, fine-grained or dense variety of the quartz mineral chert, which presents various colors. Mainly brick-red to brown-red, it owes its color to added hematite; but when mixed with clay the color is yellowish-white or gray, or with goethite brown or yellow. Jasper, long used in jewelry and ornamentation, has a dull luster but can be finely polished; its hardness and other physical properties correspond to those of quartz. The name jasper comes from the Greek (iaspis) and is of Semitic origin; in ancient writings the term was applied mainly to translucent and light-colored stones, especially chalcedony, but also to the opaque jasper.
