- Additional Information: Jasper has long been used for jewelry and ornaments. Its hardness and other physical properties correspond to those of quartz. opaque, fine-grained or dense variety of the silica mineral chert that exhibits various colors. Mainly brick red to brownish red, it owes its color to the added hematite; but when found mixed with clay the color is yellowish white or gray, or brown or yellow with goethite.
